The Board of Directors of the 173d Airborne Brigade National Memorial Foundation will conduct an Honors Ceremony on Saturday, 11 June 2011 at 1000 hours in Columbus, GA. The name of a previously unlisted Sky Soldier who died while serving in the Republic of South Viet Nam will be added to the granite panels of the 173d Airborne Brigade National Memorial. He was was recently found and verified through the help of fellow Sky Soldiers. The nine fallen Sky Soldiers who were taken from us during Operation Enduring Freedom X, and the Vietnam era Sky Soldier will be memorialized when their names will are unveiled at the 173d Airborne Brigade National Memorial. Gold Star family members and friends of our fallen have been invited to attend. The name of SSG Salvatore Giunta, the first living Medal of Honor recipient since Viet Nam will also be added to the granite panel that includes the names of the thirteen Sky Soldiers who received the Medal of Honor for their valor while in serving in the Republic of South Viet Nam. SSG Giunta served with Battle Company, 2nd Battalion (Airborne), 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173d Airborne Brigade Combat Team in Afghanistan, and on 25 October 2007, “he distinguished himself conspicuously by gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty in action.” Former members of the 173d ABCT who are currently on active duty at Fort Benning, GA, and 173d retirees are encouraged to attend the Honors Ceremony at the 173d Airborne Brigade’s National Memorial at the National Infantry Museum Campus at 1775 Legacy Way, Columbus, Georgia.
